Sumantra Mukherjee

“My works are a reflection of all that surrounds me. My affinity towards portraitures has developed since my college days where I had received the training for classical portrait making.

My attempt is to create a level of visual expression, where the faces are completed with multiple floating imageries, and distortions create a narrative.

Incorporation of numerical into my paintings works as a metaphor of the ever‐calculative society where every parameter is measured in numbers.

The ‘Numerical’ form the basic structure of my portraits. They help me build up the narration in steps, as they are used as metaphors or direct references to important dates, time or even shapes.

My transition from the suburbs into a bustling city has shown me various shades of life, which I try to bring forth. Comic yet vibrant references are drawn from the loud and the erratic behavior of the individuals in our society to the grandeur of the mythological figures.

My paintings trace the path of my upbringing and growth as a person and a painter. My visions and my experiences come together to form these images.”
