Arnab Basu

“European Surrealism to primitive tribal art influences my works. The figures may evolve from contemporary Indian context to pristine African art.

My works can be described as “abstract figurative”, with the elements being disintegrated and then reconstructed on individual two dimensional sectional planes, juxtaposed upon each other, to give an overall three dimensional effect, sometimes a bit ornamental, yet sublime and subtle.

The same philosophy is reflected in the approach towards my application of paints where I find myself placing the colors in thin transparent layers one upon the other, sometimes with a mystical effect, which may be called as “cosmic bubble effect”, that spreads, generally, in the backgrounds.

I am on the process of trying out new forms and subjects in order to achieve something which can be closer to art, which I believe is so very illusive and so ethereal.”
